Accepting change is sometimes a difficult thing to do and can be even more difficult when the ideas that spawn change go against conventional thought. The world of motorcycles is no exception to that notion. When EFI was introduced to the first production motorcycles in the 1980’s many though the idea to be a fad or a selling gimmick and could never replace carburetor fuel delivery. But the notion that EFI is a passing fad has long been dispelled and has become the standard that is expected by riders. This same doubtful mindset has been common place for any original idea that questions the tested and reliable configurations that we have become familiar with and adapted to. That same skepticism was the first reaction I experienced when asked to test the Nuetech TUbliss System on a dirt bike tire and wheel that is designed to use a conventional tube.
The TUbliss System is designed to eliminate the need for a tube on a spoke type wheel. The system utilizes a high pressure inner bead lock that seals the tire bead and sidewalls to the rim. Because of the unique bead to wheel sealing design the TUbliss System allows the tire pressure to be used as low as 10psi, which greatly improves traction, without risking a pinched tube or a flat. The TUbliss System also can reduce unsprung wheel weight by as much as 3 lbs., which improves acceleration and suspension action.
Installation of the TUbliss System is not exactly an easy task on the first attempt. Even more mentally difficult was the act of drilling a second hole in a perfectly good wheel for the correct spacing of the rim lock and valve stem. After drilling the second required hole in the wheel the installation was pretty straight forward up to the point of mounting the tire to the wheel. Using the guide plate is highly recommended to install the tire onto the wheel to make the process easier. Also watching the installation video provided below is highly recommended for first time installers. Although the first installation took some extra effort the design is well thought out, even for long time conventional tube users.
On the trails is where the TUbliss System really makes a statement. The ability to run tire pressures at levels where conventional tubes would pinch and go flat is terrific. The lower pressures did cause the rear to feel a little sluggish in high speed corners but for tight, rocky trails and off chamber trails with exposed tree roots the increased traction plants the tire firmly allowing more controlled power and torque delivery from the engine. The reduced weight of the TUbliss System also made a noticeable difference in suspension action which only required minimal tweaks to the compression and rebound adjusters. After five hours on the trails the TUbliss System held a constant 10 psi tire pressure with no signs of damage to the tire or wheel.
Although change does not come easy, especially at a price of $99, the TUbliss System design and function can help even the most conventional mind appreciate innovation. So when it comes time for a new tire or wheel step outside your comfort zone and try the TUbliss System. You could be way ahead of your time.
