Basic Tools Needed For Servicing Your Dirt Bike

Having the proper tools, supplies and work environment is critical to be able to service your dirt bike(s) efficiently and properly. Organize your work area and other specialty equipment in what space you have available to you. Having the proper tools for the job will make repairs / maintenance a whole lot easier and safer.

Listed below is a basic list of tools that could be needed while servicing dirt bikes.

  • Metric combination wrenches from about an 8mm to a 32mm will usually cover everything you’ll need.
  • Set of metric allen wrenches or bits from 1.5mm to 12mm.
  • 13/16″ Spark plug socket for spark plug removal on 2 stroke air cooled bikes.
  • 13/16″ Wrench for spark plug removal on 2 stroke water cooled bikes.
  • 1/4″ Drive metric socket set 5mm to 14mm (deep and shallow).
  • 1/4″ Drive ratchet.
  • 1/4″ Drive speed-handle or T-Handle with a 1/4″ drive end. Nice to have but not really needed.
  • 1/4″ Drive Extensions.
  • 1/4″ Drive swivel.
  • 3/8″ Drive ratchet.
  • 3/8″ Drive metric socket set deep and shallow 8mm to 22mm.
  • 3/8″ Drive Extensions.
  • 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 14mm T-Handles. Really nice to have.
  • 3/8″ Drive Torque wrench.
  • 1/2″ Drive Torque wrench.
  • 1/2″ Drive to 3/8″ drive adapter.
  • 1/2″ Drive ratchet.
  • Screwdriver set.
  • Pick set.
  • Hand impact driver.
  • Metric tape measure.
  • Pliers such as channel locks, needle nose etc.
  • Diagonal cutters.
  • Files ( rat tail / flat files ).
  • Ball peen hammer.
  • Dead blow hammer.

Shop supplies are always going to be needed while servicing your bike.

  • Nitrile gloves.
  • Clean shop rags.
  • Air filter cleaner and oil.
  • Electrical tape.
  • Teflon tape.
  • Safety wires.
  • Anti-seize.
  • Zip ties.
  • Loctite.
  • Yamabond or Hondabond.
  • Carb cleaner.
  • Chain lube.
  • Silicone spray.
  • Dielectric grease.
  • 2 stroke / 4 stroke oil.
  • Brake fluid.
  • Engine coolant.
  • Baby power ( used to prevent tire tubes from chaffing ).
